I just wanted to make you all aware on one subject that has increasing popularity on the forums: the campaign patch. I know we promised the patch within a couple weeks of the campaign release, but were were young and naive back then. We're currently working on optimizing the content to be lower-end PC and multiplayer-friendly. Click "read more" for the techincal details.
After the release, we popped open the tagset and took a look at it. First off, the tags folder was a total wreck. After picking through it and finding the content that we needed, we realized one thing causing major problems: sound effects. The sound settings were all messed up, gunshots overloaded the engine, and you could hear them coming from a mile away, which totally defeated the purpose of the silenced sniper rifle and SMG. Next thing was the models. They are lacking LOD (level of detail) models, and the thirdperson model for all custom content was the high-poly FP model. You know why you were lagging on the beachhead on The Silent Cartographer? There were probably about 15 high-polygon SPARTAN bipeds, all weilding a 3000-polygon battle rifle each. Even though this doesn't impact gameplay much, the horribly disorganized tags folder makes fixing content a living hell. The battle rifle was spread out over 4 to 5 folders, and the biped is probably spread out the same, if not further. It's hard to find things. But at any rate, all we ask of you is to stop asking about the patch. No, we haven't forgotten. We are still working on this to deliver a shiny, flawless final product. |
